Desenzano is a popular holiday resort known for its bustling activity and its nightlife. However, there also historical and cultural sights well worth a visit, such as the Villa Romana which was discovered as recently as 1921. The villa houses important findings from earlier times, as well as multicoloured mosaics that can be still admired today.
The area of Desenzano and Sirmione is full of vineyards and olive groves. They are surmounted by the tower of St. Martin (San Martino della Battaglia), which was erected to commemorate the dead soldiers of the famous 1859 battle between Austria and Piemont. At the top of the tower (74 m, reached by a spiral ramp) you can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake.
