Manerba del Garda

Description

Manerba del Garda is located on the western shore of Lake Garda and is one of the municipalities in the district Valtenesi.
According to a legend, the name of the town goes back to the Goddess Minerva, to whom the town was supposedly dedicated. Minerva allegedly found refuge in the Valtenesi valley where she let inhabitants into her art.

Scholars believe that the name Manerba is a compound consisting of the words mon – “man of war” and erb – military zone. This theory is backed up by the presence of the famous Rocca.

In the 16th century, Manerba became a haven for bandits and outlawed, leading the Republic of Venice to tear down the town walls.

Today, Manerba is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Lake Garda, mainly because of the archaeological park of the Rocca.
